    External managers, family ownership and the scope of SME internationalization

    SMEs are important to world business and the majority of SMEs are family firms. Yet some family SMEs are inert, local firms while others are dynamic and international. Do certain governance structures encourage the scale and scope of their internationalization? We jointly apply social capital and corporate governance theories to explain the scope of family SMEs internationalization, and find that professional managers externally recruited from outside the family are important, but only for lower levels of family ownership, suggesting synergistic combinations of ownership and management. It is the combination of external capital with external managers that really works

    Internationalisation, cultural distance and country characteristics: a Bayesian analysis of SME's financial performance

    Relying on the accounting data of a panel of 403 Italian manufacturing SMEs collected over a period of 5 years, we find results suggesting that multinationality per se does not impact on the economic performance of international small and medium sized firms. It is the characteristics of the country selected i.e. the political hazard, the financial stability and the economic performance that significantly influence SMEs financial performance. The management implication for small and medium sized firms selecting and entering new geographic markets is significant, since our results show that for SMEs it is the market selection process that really matters and not the degree of multinationality

    Ultra-Selective CMSMs Derived from Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Resin for CO2 Separation

    A resorcinol-formaldehyde precursor was synthesized to fabricate the CO2 selective Carbon Molecular Sieve Membranes (CMSMs) developed in this study. The degree of polymerization (DP) was analyzed via Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) and its effect on the CO2/N2 perm-selectivity and CO2 permeance was investigated. The membrane that was polymerized at 80 °C (named R80) was selected as the best performing CMSM after a preliminary test. The post treatment with oxidative atmosphere was performed to increase the CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 perm-selectivity on membrane R80. The gas permeation results and Pore Size Distribution (PSD) measurements via perm-porometry resulted in selecting the membrane with an 80 °C polymerization temperature, 100 min of post treatment in 6 bar pressure and 120 °C with an oxygen concentration of 10% (named R80T100) as the optimum for enhancing the performance of CMSMs. The 3D laser confocal microscopy results confirmed the reduction in the surface roughness in post treatment on CMSMs and the optimum timing of 100 min in the treatment. CMSM R80T100 exhibiting CO2/N2 ideal selectivity of 194 at 100 °C with a CO2 permeability of 4718 barrier was performed higher than Robeson’s upper bound limit for polymeric membranes and also the other CMSMs fabricated in this work.The research has been carried out within the TTW Perspectief Program “Microsync” project number P16-10

    Vapor/gas separation through carbon molecular sieve membranes: Experimental and theoretical investigation

    The separation of H2O vapor from (hydrogen-rich) gaseous streams is a topic of increasing interest in the context of CO2 valorisation, where the in situ water removal increases product yield and catalyst stability. In this work, composite alumina carbon molecular sieve membranes (Al-CMSM) were prepared from phenolic resin solutions loaded with hydrophilic boehmite (Îł-AlO(OH)) nanosheets (0.4–1.4 wt. % in solution) which partially transform to Îł-Al2O3 nanosheets upon thermal decomposition of the resin, improving the hydrophilicity and thus the adsorption-diffusion contribution of the H2O permeation. The Îł-Al2O3 nanosheets showed no influence on the pore size distribution of the membranes in the range of micropores, but they increased the membrane hydrophilicity. In addition, the use of boehmite in the resin solution causes an increase in the viscosity and thus an increase in the carbon layers thickness deposited on the porous α-Al2O3 support (from 1 to 3.3 ÎŒm). Furthermore, the alumina sheets introduce defects in the carbon matrix, increasing the tortuosity of the active layer, as concluded via phenomenological modelling and parametric fitting of the experimental results. As a consequence, the water permeability exhibits a maximum (1.3ꞏ10−6 molꞏs−1 Pa−1 m−1 at 150 °C) with boehmite/alumina content of ca. 0.8 wt. %, as the combined effects of increasing hydrophilicity (which favour H2O permeability) and increasing thickness and tortuosity (which hamper permeability) upon increasing boehmite loading. Similarly, the H2O/gas perm-selectivity is optimum at 1.2 wt. % boehmite loading. We further investigated the H2O permeation mechanism by modelling the mono- and multi-layer adsorption and capillary condensation of water in microporous media, which result as the main transport mechanisms in the explored conditions.This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme undergrant agreement No 838014 (C2Fuelproject)

    Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) represents a common approach to the diagnostic workup of patients with suspected coronary artery disease. Technological development has recently allowed the integration of conventional CCTA information with spectral data. Spectral CCTA used in clinical routine may allow for improving CCTA diagnostic performance by measuring myocardial iodine distribution as a marker of first-pass perfusion, thus providing additional functional information about coronary artery disease

    Spectral CT Imaging of Prosthetic Valve Embolization after Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

    Transcatheter heart valve (THV) embolization is a rare complication of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) generally caused by malpositioning, sizing inaccuracies and pacing failures. The consequences are related to the site of embolization, ranging from a silent clinical picture when the device is stably anchored in the descending aorta to potentially fatal outcomes (e.g., obstruction of flow to vital organs, aortic dissection, thrombosis, etc.). Here, we present the case of a 65-year-old severely obese woman affected by severe aortic valve stenosis who underwent TAVI complicated by embolization of the device. The patient underwent spectral CT angiography that allowed for improved image quality by means of virtual monoenergetic reconstructions, permitting optimal pre-procedural planning. She was successfully re-treated with implantation of a second prosthetic valve a few weeks later.</p

    Current ESPGHAN guidelines for celiac disease in pediatric age, tertiary care center experience: a proposal for further simplification

    According to the 2012 ESPGHAN criteria for diagnosis of celiac disease (CD), duodenal biopsy (DB) can be avoided in children with a clear malabsorption syndrome, anti-tissue transglutaminase IgA (tTG2) ≄ 10x the cut-off, anti-endomysium IgA (EMA) and HLA DQ2/DQ8 genes. The aim of this study is to report our experience and evaluate the accuracy of the actual guidelines. Patients and methods: This is a retrospective study conducted on all patients diagnosed CD from 2012 to 2018 in our Center. For all patients enrolled were analyzed: data of family history, symptoms, serology, genetics, Marsh grade and follow-up. Results: A total of 481 children [mean age 6,4 yrs; F:M= 1.8:1] were included in the study. The mean age of patients who were not subject to DB was lower (4.51 yrs) comparing with patients that received DB (6.48 yrs). Out of the 256 patients with anti-tTG2 ≄ 10 fold, 121 underwent DB because of mild symptoms (84/121) or no symptoms (37/121). In all cases Marsh type 3 was found and HLA haplotypes was compatible with CD diagnosis. Conclusions: Our study confirms that the serology has a primary importance to diagnose CD, regardless of the symptoms. These data suggest that biopsy and HLA haplotypes search, in presence of anti-tTG2 IgA ≄ 10x the cut-off, are wasteful and unhelpful for the patients

    Comprehensive transcript profiling of two grapevine rootstock genotypes contrasting in drought susceptibility links the phenylpropanoid pathway to enhanced tolerance

    In light of ongoing climate changes in wine-growing regions, the selection of drought-tolerant rootstocks is becoming a crucial factor for developing a sustainable viticulture. In this study, M4, a new rootstock genotype that shows tolerance to drought, was compared from a genomic and transcriptomic point of view with the less drought-tolerant genotype 101.14. The root and leaf transcriptome of both 101.14 and the M4 rootstock genotype was analysed, following exposure to progressive drought conditions. Multifactorial analyses indicated that stress treatment represents the main factor driving differential gene expression in roots, whereas in leaves the genotype is the prominent factor. Upon stress, M4 roots and leaves showed a higher induction of resveratrol and flavonoid biosynthetic genes, respectively. The higher expression of VvSTS genes in M4, confirmed by the accumulation of higher levels of resveratrol in M4 roots compared with 101.14, was coupled to an up-regulation of several VvWRKY transcription factors. Interestingly, VvSTS promoter analyses performed on both the resequenced genomes highlighted a significantly higher number of W-BOX elements in the tolerant genotype. It is proposed that the elevated synthesis of resveratrol in M4 roots upon water stress could enhance the plant’s ability to cope with the oxidative stress usually associated with water deficit

    Acute Delta Hepatitis in Italy spanning three decades (1991–2019): Evidence for the effectiveness of the hepatitis B vaccination campaign

    Updated incidence data of acute Delta virus hepatitis (HDV) are lacking worldwide. Our aim was to evaluate incidence of and risk factors for acute HDV in Italy after the introduction of the compulsory vaccination against hepatitis B virus (HBV) in 1991. Data were obtained from the National Surveillance System of acute viral hepatitis (SEIEVA). Independent predictors of HDV were assessed by logistic-regression analysis. The incidence of acute HDV per 1-million population declined from 3.2 cases in 1987 to 0.04 in 2019, parallel to that of acute HBV per 100,000 from 10.0 to 0.39 cases during the same period. The median age of cases increased from 27 years in the decade 1991-1999 to 44 years in the decade 2010-2019 (p &lt; .001). Over the same period, the male/female ratio decreased from 3.8 to 2.1, the proportion of coinfections increased from 55% to 75% (p = .003) and that of HBsAg positive acute hepatitis tested for by IgM anti-HDV linearly decreased from 50.1% to 34.1% (p &lt; .001). People born abroad accounted for 24.6% of cases in 2004-2010 and 32.1% in 2011-2019. In the period 2010-2019, risky sexual behaviour (O.R. 4.2; 95%CI: 1.4-12.8) was the sole independent predictor of acute HDV; conversely intravenous drug use was no longer associated (O.R. 1.25; 95%CI: 0.15-10.22) with this. In conclusion, HBV vaccination was an effective measure to control acute HDV. Intravenous drug use is no longer an efficient mode of HDV spread. Testing for IgM-anti HDV is a grey area requiring alert. Acute HDV in foreigners should be monitored in the years to come
